Let’s talk Pansies (ya… that comes out wrong)
For our Western Canadian location these plants are the most durable. We can all tell stories of how the pansy crop outside is covered with snow for a week and comes out looking fantastic. In spite of our worries. It’s an excellent crop for the very early spring, you can sell them in April. On the west coast they say: “It’s the plant you start the season with and end the season with.”
Pansies grow best in part sun, tell your customers to move plants around, depending on the time of year, if they are in containers. In the early and late part of the season these beauties can sit in the full sun but in the summer they require some shade. For the best results you should ask your customers to, “dead head”. DARN I am using Jargon, and I ask all of you not to do that. So show your customers what deadheading is so they understand.
There are a lot of series to choose from and most of them are very good. It really comes down to what your personal favorite is.
For us this is the Spring Matrix Series. They have huge flowers and are early to bloom. Within the series there are the blotched types, also referred to as “faces” for example the Blue Blotch improved and the Spring Matrix Blotch mix. Then there are the solid colors like the Spring matrix Clear Mix Series. As far as multicolored there are a lot to chose from and it is hard to choose. Our favorite is the Spring Matrix Sangria.
